THE ROOTS
UNDUN
UNDUN
2011
1. Dun
Not a very good intro and waste of a track
2. Sleep
Really slow start to the album but this is real
nice on it's own merits. When Black Thought
comes through with his verse it lifts off. 4.5/5
3. Make My ft. Big K.R.I.T.
Shit this is so dope. Big K.R.I.T steals the show
and kills the whole album, he is a genius.
But nonetheless BT is the shit aswell and this
beat is just so soothing. Classic Roots. 5/5
4. One Time ft. Phonte & Dice Raw
Another classic track from The Roots, once the
hook comes, it makes you want more. And then
the verses knock even more. 4/5
5. Kool On ft. P.O.R.N.
Crazy sample and a great beat built around it.
A catchy hook and some great verses. 4.5/5
6. The Other Side
With a typical beat pattern starting off, you know
something dope has to come, and it does with a
sick piano line reminding me that old Foxy Brown
track (or B.G., whicheva you remember).
The hook aswell is fly as hell , and so are the verses. 5/5
7. Stomp ft. P.O.R.N.
Another sick beat and greatly produced. These
tracks will be awesome live. Wish there was
another Black Thought verse maybe... 5/5
8. Lighthouse
Fuck, they just keep coming. A lot of thought been
put into making these songs. Another perfect mix
of drums, melodies, verses and hook. 5/5
9. I Remember
Deep track. Great BT verses and the hook is nice
once again. Wish this was Erykah Baduh and they
could've done a 'you got me part 2'. They came close with
the change-up. Not Drum-n-Bass this
time but a nice musical interlude and tighter hi-hats.
Awesome shit yo. Musical rap geniuses at work.
Just seriously wish it was all longer 5/5
10. Tip The Scale ft. Dice Raw
Favourite track of the alb. My favourite beat and
favourite verse from Black Thought. And on top
best hook on the alb. It can't get any better. 5/5
And then the album concludes with four musical interludes
which all seem to blend nicely so really it's one big outro.
I do love the classical aspect here
and it's such a nice breeze, but i do feel a little
left short with only nine tracks. However, those nine
tracks combined, as an album, is one of the best
hip-hop has to offer these days. The Roots never
fail to amaze or impress and they came through
big time again with this follow-up to How I Got Over.
I prolly have to say this is my favourite Roots album
of all despite the lenght (have to say that once more).
Hip-Hop at it's finest. Top notch!
Overall Score: 9.5/10
